Please make the time this Memorial Day to remember why we celebrate it. Take your family to the local parade. Visit a local memorial and talk to your kids about why they should remember the sacrifices that our men and women in the armed forces have made over the years. Tell them that America, even with all of our problems, is still the greatest nation on earth for a reason. The freedom we enjoy is sought after by millions around the world……people die trying to come here. The freedom we often take for granted, the freedom that others can only dream of, has been bought and paid for with the blood of men and women who answered the call to defend it. We owe it to them to honor their memory and be thankful.
And remember too that even today men and women are not sharing this Memorial Day with their friends and family at home. They are not boating, having a BBQ or enjoying their child’s little league game. Instead, they are the Airman manning a bunker on the perimeter of an air base in Afghanistan; or the Marine on patrol in that same country wary that every piece of garbage along the way might be an IED; or the Seaman isolated hundreds of feet under the ocean for months on end in a nuclear submarine; the Soldier in some remote spot in Yemen that we’re not even supposed to know about.
These are the people that are sacrificing the luxuries most of us take for granted every single day. They have answered the call to serve something bigger than themselves.
To all of them, I say thank you.
